Ben Van Cauwenbergh leitete von 2008 bis 2024 zunächst als Ballettdirektor, ab 2013 als Ballettintendant das Aalto Ballett Essen. Der gebürtige Antwerpener erhielt als Sohn der Tänzerin Anna Brabants („Geschwister Brabants“) bereits frühzeitig Ballettunterricht und nach seiner Ausbildung am Staatlichen Institut für Ballett ein erstes Engagement beim Königlichen Ballett von Flandern. 1976 errang er beim internationalen Ballettwettbewerb von Varna die Silbermedaille sowie die Goldmedaille beim renommierten „Prix de Lausanne“. Von 1978 bis 1984 war er Erster Solist des London Festival Ballet (heute English National Ballet), wo er zahlreiche Hauptrollen tanzte und eng mit Rudolf Nurejew zusammen arbeitete. 1984 kehrte er nach Flandern zurück und wurde vom Magazin „Dance and Dancers“ zum Tänzer des Jahres gewählt. 1987 wechselte er als Erster Solist zum Ballett von Bern, 1989 als Ballettdirektor und Chefchoreograf nach Luzern. Von 1992 bis 2007 arbeitete er als Ballettdirektor und Chefchoreograf am Hessischen Staatstheater Wiesbaden. Seine Arbeiten bilden weltweit Repertoire-Bestandteile der Ballett-Compagnien. In Essen waren zuletzt seine Ballette „Dornröschen“, „Schwanensee“ und „Der Nussknacker“ sowie „Don Quichotte“, „Rock around Barock“ und „Tanzhommage an Queen“ zu erleben.
Ben Van Cauwenbergh was artistic director of the Essen Ballet Company from 2008 to 2024. Born in Antwerp, the son of dancer Anna Brabants ("Brabants Siblings"), he received ballet lessons at an early age and, after training at the State Institute of Ballet, received his first engagement with the Royal Ballet of Flanders. In 1976 he won the silver medal at the Varna International Ballet Competition and the gold medal at the prestigious "Prix de Lausanne". From 1978 to 1984 he was First Soloist of the London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet), where he danced numerous leading roles and worked closely with Rudolf Nureyev. In 1984 he returned to Flanders and was named ”Dancer of the Year“ by Dance and Dancers magazine. In 1987 he moved to the Ballet of Bern as First Soloist, and in 1989 to Lucerne as Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer. From 1992 to 2007 he worked as ballet director and chief choreographer at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. His works form part of the repertoire of ballet companies worldwide. In Essen, his ballets "Sleeping Beauty", "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker" as well as "Don Quixote", "Rock around Baroque" and "Dance Homage to Queen" were recently performed.
